Slate Info.

Slate is over 400,000,000 million years old sometimes older, that puts it about the time that dinosaurs roamed the Earth give or take a few thousand years.Slate deposits occur on almost all continents and Europe compraises the worldwide most important slate deposits, mainly in Spain, Germany, Great Britain, France, Italy and the Czech Republic. It is quarried in many countries, and a little closer to home North Wales.Cumbria and Cornwall. The quarried slate is honed to give as near as possible an equal thickness, it is then cut into the size of floor tile that is required.

Slate Flooring

Many different sizes are available and a subtle mix of sizes can produce a beautiful floor. The floor can be further enhanced to suit tastes & styles by chipping the edges all around and when this style is laid with a wider grout joint than normal it gives a flagstone effect. Fossils such as leaves, small creatures and leaves and even fish skeletons are often found in the slate proving its age. Here at Steve Hilldrith Interiors we go one step further and design and cut the borders to our clients specifications producing a unique floor as shown on the photographs. Once the floor has been laid and grouted it is then rubbed manually with wire wool to remove any loose pieces and debris, then it is sealed with 3 coats of sealer. To keep the floor looking at its best further coats should be applied every 6 months.
